The task of filling Edwin van der Sar’s gloves was never going to be easy whoever was assigned the job.

The fact that the onus has been placed on the shoulders of a 20 year old in David De Gea may be worrying to some but his performances both for Spain and former club Atletico Madrid suggest that he may be more than capable.

Upon signing for United, European Cup winner Alex Stepney endorsed the young Spaniard and others including Cristiano Ronaldo have joined in praising the goalkeeper but now he has received the highest praise possible as the man he was signed to replace has spoken out in his favour.

Edwin van der Sar called time on his United career in May but is confident the man brought in to replace him can go on to be a success at Old Trafford.

Speaking to ESPN Star, van der Sar said:

“They (United) scouted all over Europe and found a couple of targets and they chose de Gea.

“Hopefully he’s going to have a great career at Manchester United.

“He’s very talented. He’s already won a trophy with Atletico Madrid and the Spain Under-21 team so the prospect of him doing well is there.

“Everybody has to be his own person but I’ve met him. I’ve spoken to him and it looks to me as though he can handle it.”
