With the end of the transfer window comes the inevitable lamentation.

Despite a brilliant start to the season which has seen the emergence of Tom Cleverley as well as players like Phil Jones and Ashley Young shining for us, we still want more.

‘We should have signed so & so’, ‘Blah blah blah will help us beat Barca’ etc are refrains commonly heard amongst the transfer muppets.

Whilst tons of players were eyed up by our armchair scouts, none got the blood rushing like Wesley Sneijder.

We played footsie with the midfielder only for the window to close without having signed the Dutchman much to the chagrin of fans all around the world.

Sir Alex insisted there would be no deal and we as fans chose not to believe him, holding on to the hope that he would be a United player by 11pm last night.

But don’t feel too silly, it appears Wes believed so too!

According to quotes from Dutch paper AD, he too believed a move to Old Trafford would materialise,

“I just felt that it was close, yes [I thought I was going].

“We had several talks, the situation was such that Inter had to sell a player, Eto’o or me, and indeed there was interest.

“They [Manchester United] are one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it did not seem a bad thing – but at the same time I do not want to leave Inter.

“Italy is great for me, and I cannot exclude that they [United] got that feeling, for me a move was not an absolute must and there were a few things which meant it did not happen.”
