Paul Pogba is edging closer to a first team debut according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The French midfielder has long been a star of United’s reserve and academy team and this summer Sir Alex revealed he debated with himself whether to take the youngster on the US Tour before deciding against.

With his star on the rise after Sir Alex spoke him up during the summer and some claiming Pogba was part of the reason United didn’t pursue Wesley Sneijder with more vigor, big things are expected of him and he may get a chance to display this against Leeds in the Carling Cup:

“Pogba’s in the first-team training set-up now, so that’s the first step.

“After that, it’ll likely depend on when we decide to make changes. He’ll probably be involved in the League Cup and that’ll be his chance to establish himself in the squad.”

Pogba, himself has aspirations of breaking into United’s first team and says no more than ever he can see it happening,

“Every day I’m aiming for the first team, Sir Alex gave me confidence by picking me for the pre-season game against Marseille in August. So I know I’m on the right track.

“Everyone at the club is great – they look after young players well. We have a laugh and there’s a special atmosphere.”
