“Don’t be writing us off if we are not there by January.”

Following disappointment in Europe, United turn their attention back to the league this weekend with Newcastle visiting Old Trafford.

Following a brilliant start, United stuttered allowing Man City to take  5 point lead at the top of the table.

But City have a tough run of games coming up and perhaps Sir Alex’s wish of being top of the table by his 70th birthday will be realised.

Even if it is not Phil Jones won’t be worried.

The defender feels that even if United are not top of the table they can at least apply some pressure on our cross city neighbours,

“City have done fantastically this season. I am not taking anything away from them.

“But they do have some tough games coming up.

“I don’t care how good you are, teams can be put under pressure. This is a difficult league to be in.

“It would be nice to reach top spot by Christmas. But it is not essential.

“Don’t be writing us off if we are not there by January.”
