Following David De Gea’s performance against Liverpool on Saturday in the FA Cup, European Cup winning keeper Alex Stepney has suggested that Sir Alex sticks with Anders Lindegaard.
De Gea came in for heavy criticism for the two goals that Liverpool scored as well as various other shaky moments during the 90 minutes and whilst Stepney understands why he was included in the team for the game he feels the young Spaniard should be taken out of the firing line.
Instead he feels rival Anders Lindegaard should be given the chance to establish himself as United’s number one after his recent spell in goal.
Speaking in the MEN, Stepney said:
“I know some people were shocked that De Gea was chosen for the cup tie after Lindegaard had done so well.
“But I could understand it as the manager has been chopping and changing them. It was the FA Cup and he had done well in front of the Kop in October’s league game. So I didn’t have too many worries about it. I thought it was an ideal situation for him after being out for four matches.
“But I think he now really needs to be out of the limelight for a while and let him regroup and rebuild his confidence. There is nothing worse than bad press and the last few days won’t have been good for him.
“I have nothing against David but I always thought one of them would have pushed on in the battle to be the number one and I think at the moment Anders Lindegaard has done that.
“He is playing better and looks more confident and I think you have to go with that.”
Definitely,I’m kool whenever Anders is on goal for us.Premiership is the game of men not boys please tell SAF to forget the money factor and face reality DDG is a good lad but need to game from the line for a period of time to gain experience and weight.GGMU
