Last night wasn’t the best of games, we were ridiculously casual in our approach and in the end scraped past Ajax.
But things could have been worse. As the game wore on and Ajax pressed to for a way back into the tie it took a brilliant save from David De Gea to keep things level at 1-1.
Ajax appealed for a penalty that was rightly turned down but from the resulting corner De Gea was called into action as he pushed a bullet header from Siem De Jong over the bar.
Keep the top draw saves coming!
Credit again to the brilliant Olly
wonderful save, but poor performance team-wise. Much has been made of the inexperienced defence from last night but I’m not sure if I agree.
The problem was that we didn’t have CM’s who were making the forward pass and putting their defence under pressure often enough which in turn allowed Eriksen et al to pressure our defence by keeping possession really well.
SAF’s mistake wasn’t in putting together that defence but by going with Park and Cleverly in the central midfield positions.
Also, I’m not sure what’s going on with Pogba but it seems to me that we’d dare not let him go. If it’s wages, then perhaps we have to pay that premium for a player who seems to have the talent to play for Utd and would qualify for one of our ‘home grown’ slots. It’s not like bringing in Modric (or someone of his calibre) would be cheap…
