There had been much talk of Rio Ferdinand’s decline at the start of the season.

With fresh faces ready to challenge him for his place and a slight but noticeable dip in his performances, brought on by his well documented battles with injuries, many thought Ferdinand had reached the end of the road.

But this was not to be the case and Ferdinand has battled  back to remind people that he isn’t quite the spent force that people thought. Ferdinand’s reinvigoration has coincided with the re-emergence of Jonny Evans too, with Ferdinand proving a calming, assuring influence to the young Ulsterman.

With a 10th anniversary at the club rapidly approaching, there has been talk of a new contract for Ferdinand. Good news for all involved with the club, especially his regular defensive partner Nemanja Vidic.

Vidic has missed the majority of the season with injury but with a return date set for the start of next season, Rio’s ‘hunger’ should set United in good stead for yet another title race:

“At the beginning of the season there were a lot of people questioning Rio, asking whether he could do what he did in the past, can he play, is he finished?

“This was nonsense. Rio has hunger and now he has proved people they are wrong.

“He is a very important player, not just this year but over the past years and he has done very well over the last few months.”

One response to ““He is a very important player, not just this year but over the past years””

Rio will go down as one of the best defenders in the world.. Our defence looks settled when he is there
