“The form he’s showing now is as good as it’s ever been.”

Central to our fight to retain the title has been the return of Paul Scholes.

Retiring last May, since he rejoined the action in January United have kicked into another gear and surged to the top of the table. His importance can be seen in that the only league game we have lost since his return was against Wigan, a game where Scholes was rested.

United now face the daunting task of a visit to the Etihad on Monday knowing they must avoid defeat if they are to retain their title, but regardless of Monday’s result it is confirmed that everyone would like to see Scholes remain at the club, at least for one more year, especially Sir Alex Ferguson:

“I’m not going to ask him until the end of the season, I don’t want to put anything in his mind at all.

“It was a break for us to get Paul back. The form he’s showing now is as good as it’s ever been.

“He brings a calmness to the game and he can dictate the tempo of matches for us. He’s been doing that since he’s come back.

“He’s probably in better form than he was last season, because when he made his decision to retire it would have been in his mind that it was his last season and maybe it did affect him.”
