Sir Alex Ferguson has twice spoken on his desire to sign the Dutch striker, but on Wednesday night admitted that Arsenal weren’t keen to play ball and were instead attempting to deal with other clubs.
But with Juventus cooling their interest and Roberto Mancini conceding defeat in his attempts to sign the striker, Manchester United appear firmly in the driving seat.
All of this will count for nothing if Arsenal continue to resist United’s attempts to sign the striker, but with time ticking and his contract running it would be foolish of them to let him leave on a free.
A move looks a long way off, but Rooney would be happy to see Van Persie at Old Trafford as he told The Daily Mirror:
“Of course he’s a player that I admire.
“He’s a fantastic player. He’s been amazing for Arsenal over many years. Last season was probably his best season of all. He scored a lot of goals.
“If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad.”
Rooney, believes the two could work together, although was quick to remind that United have a strong stable of striker currently at the club:
“I’d like to think so – but you’d have to ask the manager about that.
“There’s a lot of forwards here already with myself, [Danny] Welbeck, Chicharito and [Dimitar] Berbatov, who’s still here.
“So there’s a lot of forwards fighting for a place.”
