Alexander Buttner will have done his chances of supplanting Patrice Evra as Manchester United’s starting left back no harm after scoring on his debut.

With the midweek Champions League tie in mind Sir Alex Ferguson sent out a under strength team to face Wigan, but it made no difference as United romped to a 4-0 win over Roberto Martinez’s.

Javier Hernandez saw an early penalty saved after Danny Welbeck was felled, but United always looked threatening and although it took time they finally broke the deadlock through Paul Scholes in the 51st minute.

Javier Hernandez made up for his miss from 12 yards earlier in the game by slotting in from close range before Alexander Buttner capped an impressive display with a debut goal. The left back rode a number of Wigan challenges before squeezing his effort past Al-Habsi at the near post and Powell also opened his United account, stroking the ball past Al-Habsi from 18 yards.

United will face tougher challenges than this but with City and Chelsea both dropping points, this could be a good day for Sir Alex’s side.
