Ferguson explained Nemanja Vidic’s absence was merely a precaution as United’s captain sat out the 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Returning from a cruciate injury, Vidic found himself thrust into first team action this season and with injuries to Smalling, and initially Evans there was little let up for the Serbian.

But having complained about his knee prior to the game, made the decision to leave him out in favour of last season’s central defensive pairing of and Jonny Evans.

Speaking to MUTV, said:

“He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break today.

“Hopefully he’ll be alright next week.”

With picking up a knock during the game and having to noticeably limp upon returning to the field, news that Vidic is fine will comes as a boost as face Tottenham at next week.
