Sir Alex Ferguson explained Nemanja Vidic’s absence was merely a precaution as United’s captain sat out the 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Returning from a cruciate injury, Vidic found himself thrust into first team action this season and with injuries to Smalling, Jones and initially Evans there was little let up for the Serbian.

But having complained about his knee prior to the game, Sir Alex made the decision to leave him out in favour of last season’s central defensive pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans.

Speaking to MUTV, Sir Alex said:

“He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break today.

“Hopefully he’ll be alright next week.”

With Rio Ferdinand picking up a knock during the game and having to noticeably limp upon returning to the field, news that Vidic is fine will comes as a boost as United face Tottenham at Old Trafford next week.
