“Obviously, at some stage, one of them will take over”

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed David De Gea following his performance against Cluj, and says he will make a choice on his first choice keeper at some point in the season.

Sir Alex has been rotating his keepers since David De Gea’s error against Fulham in the second game of the season, and the Spaniard has had to settle for appearances in Europe and cup competitions whilst Anders Lindegaard has been preferred between the sticks in the league.

Some feel the lack of a settled number 1 has harmed United at the back, and the team have been uncharacteristically porous this season. Well there may be a solution to this problem as Sir Alex has said he will make his choice, although hasn’t set a timeframe for when:

“David was excellent [in Cluj].

“He’s an outstanding goalkeeper who is getting better all the time. I don’t know whether I should play him on Sunday or not. The way we’ve been doing it in the last few weeks has worked quite well for us really.

“I think everybody wants to play and goalkeepers are no different. But the way I look at it, at the moment, is giving the two of them experience will help them in the long term.

“Obviously, at some stage, one of them will take over if he shows real consistency, top-level performance and maturity. At the moment, neither has got that big-game experience but they will get that in time.

“I’m not setting any targets [in terms of a time-frame for that to happen].”
