“He’s had one bad game in about six months!”

Tom Cleverley and Jonny Evans have laughed off the criticism aimed at team mate Rio Ferdinand, saying that the veteran defender’s class and experience is still evident for all to see.

Ferdinand put in a polished performance against Liverpool that went unheralded, but there was a mini storm following his showing against Spurs where his performance was well below his usual standard.

Ferdinand quickly bounced back, impressing against Newcastle on Sunday and both Cleverley and Evans feel the defender still has much to offer despite turning 34 next month as they told MUTV:

“People were doubting Rio but he’s had one bad game in about six months.

“He was fantastic along with Rafael, Patrice [Evra] and Jonny [Evans] for anyone doubting our defence.

“We have conceded a few goals due to some small mistakes this season but that’s a team thing – not just the defence. I couldn’t believe some of the stuff I read about Rio in the week. It’s definitely not deserved is that.”

Defensive partner Evans added:

“The thing with Rio is that he is so experienced, he cruises through games.

“He comes off at the end and there is not a bit of sweat on him, he could probably play on and on. But that just shows the quality he has got and the experience.”
