Michael O’Neill has hailed Jonny Evans following Northern Ireland’s draw in Porto against a Cristiano Ronaldo lead Portugal.

It was expected that the stars of Portugal would prove too much for Northern Ireland but the side, lead by Evans, were just minutes away from a memorable victory before Helder Postiga levelled for the hosts.

Jonny Evans’ performance at the back stood out amongst a number of strong showings from O’Neill’s side and his manager, whilst praising his team’s performance on the night, singled out his captain specifically.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, O’Neill said of the United center back:

“He is going to be a leader of men and a leader of this team.”

The performance is another step in the right direction for the 24 year old who has gone from strength to strength after a tough 12 month spell earlier in his United career.
