Having made his return from injury and in line to play in Wednesday’s game against FC Cluj, Manchester United’s Phil Jones is happy to be back but accepts he will have to fight for games in defence.

Jones made his return against Galatasaray earlier this month and since then has made just one more appearance, as a late sub in the 1-0 win against West Ham on Wednesday.

At some point this season every one of Manchester United’s center backs has been injured, but as Christmas approaches United find themselves in an unfamiliar position with all fit or returning to fitness.

This will mean fierce competition for places in Sir Alex’s sides but Jones is relishing the fight and plans to knuckle down, work hard and force his way into the manager’s plans:

“That’s football, it’s swings and roundabouts with injuries. It’s amazing how quickly you can be up there one minute and then down there. Everyone knows that.

“I’ve just got to knuckle down, train well and, when I get the chance, perform well.

“I feel fit and strong. Obviously I haven’t played a lot of minutes yet. But I felt good in the game I have had, and it was quite a difficult one to come back into.

“It is going to take a while to get my match fitness back but hopefully I can pick up some more minutes as the season progresses.”
