Fryers deal was all kosher claim TottenhamAfter Sir Alex Ferguson announced his displeasure with Tottenham and the manner in which they signed former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers, Tottenham have hit back denying any wrongdoing and claiming the deal was all above board.

After Manchester United and Tottenham failed to agree a compensation package for the defender in the summer, Fryers moved to Belgian side Standard Liege.

But less than 6 months later, the Manchester born left back returned to England to sign for Tottenham, leading Sir Alex to call foul play.

But a Tottenham spokesman has cited homesickness and falling out of the plans of Liege’s new manager as reason as to why Fryers returned to England so quickly:

“Zeki was out of the contract last summer, we had looked into the possibility of signing the player, but were unable to agree a deal on the terms Manchester United were asking.

“Zeki chose to go to Standard Liege, who paid compensation to United.

“However when Liege sacked their manager in November, Zeki was not part of the new manager’s plans.

“He became homesick and wanted to return to England. His representatives made contact with clubs in England and this afforded us a second opportunity to sign the player.

“As per FIFA’s solidarity contribution mechanism, Manchester United will receive five per cent of the transfer fee we have paid.”
