Robin Van Persie scored the winner against Man City at the Etihad

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany feels Robin Van Persie is making the difference this season, claiming that with the signing Manchester United ‘hit the jackpot’.

Van Persie shunned Roberto Mancini’s advances to join United this summer after announcing his intention to leave the Emirates, and his 22 goals have played a large part in United making the knockout stages of the Champions League and currently sitting 9 points clear atop the Premier League.

It is thought that the Dutchman was Mancini’s priority, but instead his goals are propelling United forward; a point especially poignant as City’s strikers haven’t found the net with the frequency that they did last term.

And whilst it isn’t a matter that he dwells on, Kompany is well aware of the impact Van Persie choosing the red side of Manchester over the blue has had on the season.

Speaking in The Daily Mail, Kompany said:

“United hit the jackpot with Van Persie.

“But you can’t think ‘What if’ about Van Persie. I am not sitting here thinking, ‘What if we had signed Lionel Messi’ either.

“His transfer has made a direct impact but to say he’s the reason we can’t make it – if it turns out that way – is not correct. I still believe we can do this but if we don’t, there will be plenty more reasons than the fact we didn’t sign one player and another club did.
