Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Dimitar Berbatov’s spell at Old Trafford almost saw United not sign Robin Van Persie.
United signed Berbatov for Tottenham in 2008 aged 28, and with United preferring to sign young players with room to develop and that could potentially be sold on by large fees, the signing broke from United’s policy at the time.
And whilst Berbtov did well in his 4 years at the club, his time at Old Trafford wasn’t an unmitigated success by any stretch of the imagination.
So Sir Alex Ferguson says the move for Van Persie was discussed intensely before deciding to pull the trigger and go for the Arsenal man:
“Van Persie’s age was certainly an issue because it has not always worked when we have bought older players.
“David Gill said to me after we bought Dimitar Berbatov [from Tottenham for £30 million] that we had to be careful when signing older players, but Van Persie was different.
“He was phenomenal for Arsenal last season and so I was confident it would work.”
