Rooney scores the winner against Fulham

Andy Cole believes Wayne Rooney has a future at Manchester United, and has backed the striker to show his worth to the team next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the striker had asked for a transfer earlier this month, and whilst there have been reports that Rooney has denied asking to leave, it hasn’t stopped rumours of potential destinations from flying around.

Currently PSG are said to be favourites for the striker’s signature, and are set to make their oil money work for them in the hopes they can lure him to Paris but Cole doesn’t think it is a cert that Rooney will leave.

Speaking at a Bwin event in Manchester the former United hitman said that Rooney’s best years are still ahead of him and hopefully these are at Old Trafford:

“His days here are not over – far, far from it. He is a young man and the best years are still in front of him. No way has he peaked.

“The only two people you could get an answer from about why his season was what it was is Sir Alex and Wayne Rooney. But whatever has happened I still think going forward it is important to keep Wayne Rooney at United because he is a top player. It is important for Manchester United to keep every top player at the club.

“Hopefully he will stay. I love watching him play. He plays with great endeavour and great energy. He reminds me of a schoolkid when he’s playing because he wants to get on the ball all the time.

“It is still in him. Okay he’s had one bad season. Last season he scored 34 goals and because he’s not scored as many this time everyone is saying he’s peaked. If he scored 25-30 again next season will he have peaked again? That’s football. One year you might get 25, the next only 15. It has happened to us all.

“I think everybody wants him to stay. Ultimately it is down to him.”
