Rio Ferdinand had a fine season and has signed a new deal

David Moyes has spoken of his delight at Rio Ferdinand’s decision to sign a new 1 year deal at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand’s deal was due to end this summer but having retired from England duty in order to prolong his United career, the defender signed a new deal yesterday.

Ferdinand has been impressive over the last 10 months as United captured an astonishing 20th league title, and Moyes is pleased to have retained the 34 year old’s services:

“It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club.

“Even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room. I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.”

United have been linked with a number of center backs this season, the latest being Inter Milan’sĀ Andrea Ranocchia. But if Ferdinand can remain fit like he has this season and put in the same level of performance United will be able to focus on other areas of the team, especially as Vidic will likely be fit for the new season and the likes of Evans, Smalling and Jones are waiting in the wings.
