David Moyes’ summer plans may have been dented with news that two of his former players may not be joining him at Old Trafford.
It is thought that Moyes would be looking to add Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines to his squad at Manchester United but it appears neither will be following him to Old Trafford.
Fellaini is one of many midfielders Moyes has looked at but it is believed that Arsenal have triggered the £22m release clause in Fellaini’s contract and are set to open talks with the Belgian about a move to The Emirates.
Moyes has been actively seeking to bolster Manchester United’s midfield with Kevin Strootman, Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas all linked with the club, and whilst there is still a possibility that Strootman and Alcantara may arrive, Cesc has insisted that he will be staying at the Nou Camp.
Leighton Baines has long been linked with Manchester United and this has increased further since Moyes was announced as new United manager, but the man the replaced Moyes at Goodison Park is adamant that the left back won’t be heading to Old Trafford.
Roberto Martinez has talked up Baines, saying:
“For me, Leighton has been the best left-back in the league for a few seasons now, and I’m really excited to work with him.
“This dressing room finished top six and it is one of the most impressive teams, who have developed a winning mentality – it is something we cannot afford to lose.”
Martinez’s words echo chairman Bill Kenwright’s who also insisted that Baines would be staying on Merseyside and plans to offer the defender a new deal:
“Leighton is under contract, and I’ve told David not to come back for him!”
“Most of our players, if not all of them, are under good, long contracts at the moment, and Roberto went through each of the players, talking on my sofa, saying what they could do.
“He is looking forward to getting all of them together and keeping hold of them. He rates them all.
“There has been no back and forward dialogue with Leighton about a new contract yet, but that will start. He knows we want him to stay.
In other news Guillermo Varela will undergo his medical later today ahead of his move to Old Trafford.
