Gary Neville feels the team is evolving

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville believes that whilst David Moyes has to manage the squad he has in order to  accommodate everyone, a new central midfield signing should be a priority for the new United manager.

United are seeing their options dwindle after a number of reported target look like they have slipped the net, the latest being Thiago Alcantara who the press believe is on his way to Bayern Munich to reunite with former manager Pep Guardiola.

Uncertainty about Darren Fletcher’s health, uncertainty about Anderson in general as well as the retirement of Paul Scholes means reinforcements are needed and Neville, doing a Q&A with The Guardian , backed this up:

“Last year Michael Carrick was outstanding, playing virtually every game. Paul Scholes may have gone but Tom Cleverley played well in there, and they have Anderson, Ryan Giggs still there. What Sir Alex Ferguson was great at was sitting back and saying to himself: ‘OK, if I buy a couple of midfield players, what about Tom Cleverley? I need to get Phil Jones into my team so, if Rafael is playing right-back, I’ve got [Nemanja] Vidic, [Rio] Ferdinand, [Chris] Smalling and [Jonny] Evans at the back, where am I going to get him a game?’

You always have to weigh up the damage it does to your squad to sign players unnecessarily. In saying that, I’m pretty certain it’s an area Moyes will look at because of the retirement of Scholes and the heavy reliance upon Carrick. A couple of injuries and he would look very light in there.”

Neville also spoke on the challenge that lays ahead of Moyes, as well as what the future holds for Wayne Rooney and the rest of the interview can be read here.
