Darren Fletcher scored on his first Premier League start in nearly a year

With Manchester United urgently seeking a new midfielder, their search will become that bit more necessary after Darren Fletcher revealed he isn’t quite sure when he will be making his return fromĀ ulcerative colitis.

Fletcher has undergone a number of surgeries and dietary changes to battle the illness and with this being Fletcher’s second spell out with the illness, it was uncertain whether he would be able to return.

But good news earlier in the year confirmed that the Scotland captain would be back, possibly in time for the start of the season. But the midfielder has cast doubts over his return claiming that he is unsure of a return date:

“I’m still in the hands of the surgeons at the moment – I’ve not actually started training yet.

“I’ve been doing my own little bit in the gym, which is keeping me ticking along nicely and I’m waiting for the surgeon to give me the go-ahead to join in training.

“I don’t have a timescale for when I will be back playing really. Hopefully it is not going to be too far away in the distant future. I just need to be patient. After all I’ve gone through I think it’s important that I’m patient.

“If it means a few extra weeks to get myself right, then so be it.”

Fletcher last appeared for United on Boxing Day 2012 and underwent surgery in January but aged 29 the capacity in which he will be able to function having struggled with the illness remains a mystery if he does in fact return.
