Schmeichel Advises Against ‘Marquee’ Signing

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has advised David Moyes to avoid making a ‘marquee’ signing just for the sake of it.

Earlier this summer new Chief Exec Ed Woodward suggested a marquee signing would soften the blow of the departures of David Gill and Sir Alex Ferguson, and the club thus pursued a number of high profile names but to no avail.

With the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Fabregas and Thiago all linked with United but not joining United run the risk of making no signings this summer with the transfer window closing in 11 days.

Whilst this may not be as big a problem as some perceive, Schmeichel believes United should attempt to sign players that will improve the team regardless of stature rather than someone with a big name to make a statement.

“I would never bring in a player to make a statement.

“Maybe with a new manager and a new chief executive they feel a need to tell the fans Manchester United still have the power and money and can still sign the players.

“That is important because there are a lot of fans out there who are unsure about how financially strong Manchester United are and how committed the owners are to spend the money that is being created by the club.

“But the players have to be an improvement. If they are not of the right calibre you stay away from it.

“You don’t sign a player for the sake of it.”
