Jose Mourinho isn't ready for the United hotseat

Spanish paper El Pais is reporting that current Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was so disappointed about missing out on the Manchester United job that he cried!

It was believed that the Portuguese manager was in the running for the United job, but when Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as United manager in May his position was filled by David Moyes.

Sir Alex went on to say that Moyes was his personal appointment, whilst Mourinho who was later appointed Chelsea manager claimed that he was only ever interested in returning to his old club.

But the report taken from a book on Mourinho’s spell in Spain is to the contrary and claims that Mourinho went as far as using agent Jorge Mendes to try and get Manchester United to reconsider their decision:

“On May 8, 2013 the people who worked for the company for Gestifute, the company’s representation in the world of football industry, awoke in a state of excitement unknown. Jose Mourinho kept calling employees . Its partners have heard him loud and in a sobbing voice. The most feared man in the company was demolished.”

Gestifute, the agency founded by Jorge Mendes, have a good working relationship with United after engineering a number of deals for the club and Mourinho attempted to use this relationship to his advantage during the episode:

“In the morning (he) called Mendes (agent) to liaise with the United urgently. Until the end, he wanted his agent to pressure the English club in an attempt to block any decision. It was an act of desperation. Both knew that Mendes had put Mourinho on the market for a year. David Gill , the United chief executive, held regular talks with Gestifute and was aware of the arrangement of Mourinho. But were not interested in him as manager.”

The paper claim that the decision even disrupted his preparations as Real Madrid faced Malaga, a game that his side won 6-2:

“That afternoon was preparing to concentrate with the team before playing the 36th game of the season against Malaga at the Bernabeu. He was filled with grief.”

The authenticity of these reports will undoubtedly be questioned but with Sir Alex’s relationship with Mourinho and Mourinho’s reaction to Real Madrid’s victory over United in the Champions League last season, you wouldn’t be wrong to think that Mourinho would have at least be considered.

Mourinho quickly moved to claim that he had been offered the job but rejected it, and if the report is true wouldn’t be the first time Mourinho has tried to save face with some well executed PR.
