Today saw Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic turn 32, and with defensive partner Rio Ferdinand turning 35 next month, the duo are at the tail end of their careers.

Ferdinand suffered the indignation of being dropped following a horror show against West Brom, masked behind the pretence of an injury, and whilst Ferdinand if managed properly can go on and achieve the same kind of success he did last season, United will need to start making plans for the future.

Enter Jonny Evans!

The Northern Irish center back has long been thought of a replacement when Ferdinand and Vidic are put out to pasture, and this may become a reality very soon.

This Saturday he was partnered with Phil Jones in defence and put in a solid performance, indicating that he is indeed ready to be called upon if needed.

Previously Evans was drafted in beside a more senior player, as a partner to Ferdinand or Vidic but the fact that he is now the senior player that younger players see as a ward speaks volumes.

There is a good chance that this may be Ferdinand’s last season, and Vidic may not be far behind him but Evans development means that the blow will be somewhat softened.
