Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he passed up the chance to sign Eden Hazard in 2010, instead opting to sign Bebe.

The Portuguese attacker is one of Sir Alex’s most enigmatic signings, joining United for £7.4m in 2010. Failing to impress in his showings, Bebe has undergone a number of loans and currently finds himself back in Portugal with Paços de Ferreira.

An unknown quantity back in 2010, Sir Alex decided to pursue the player but it meant missing out on another, then Lille star Eden Hazard.

With the Bebe move turning out how it has and Hazard impressing for Chelsea when joining 2 seasons later, Sir Alex has admitted that perhaps he didn’t quite get this one right.

Speaking to Portuguese paper A Bola, the former United manager said:

“With feet like his, Bebe was able to score 20 goals per season.

“We saw Hazard, but instead hired Bebe. Who would have bet that would not work?

“It is clear that he had a difficult childhood wandering the streets of Lisbon.”
