Having suffered a recurrence of his colonic problem last December, Darren Fletcher returned to football against Fulham’s reserves this week and looked like he was ready to get back into the swing of things.

The Scot has been back before, his comeback last time proved a false dawn so it would be foolish to pin our hopes on Fletcher coming back and solving our midfield problem but with his skillset, which he displayed at the AJ Stadium on Monday, it’s hard not to be excited by Fletcher’s return.

There was a period where he was our most improved and important midfielder; Arsene Wenger’s criticism of the Scotland captain was a badge of honour as it let fans know that he was proving too tough an opponent for the North London outfit and when he missed the European Cup final, it was felt that his absence was to our detriment.

But as we saw with his last comeback, the illness had taken a lot out of him and it is likely that it will have this time too, even worse he is now 29 and his body will struggle even more to adapt back to the rigours of first team football.

But one thing that has never been in doubt regardless of his health is his football skills and they were in full display in United’s 2-2 draw.

It’s been a long journey for Fletcher, hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel for him.
