Axel Witsel

Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel has admitted that he is hoping a big club tries to sign him, with a preference for an English side.

The physical Belgian currently plays in Russia, joining Zenit in 2012 after a season in Portugal with Benfica. Witsel, who cost the Russian side €40m, is believed to be valued at €30m by Zenit who are open to offers according to Izvestia.

Whilst Napoli have shown interest, Witsel is hoping that an English side comes in for him so he can showcase his ability to a wider audience, as well as link up with international teammates and friends who currently play in the Premier League.

Witsel told Nieuwsblade:

“Indeed, I hope a big club (comes for me).

“I also see that my teammates at teams like Chelsea or Manchester United play, but I did not do badly over there (Russia).

“There will come a day when one of those clubs will show interest and I can leave.

“My preference goes out to the Premier League. Not because half the national team is playing, but because competition is the most viewed.”

Witsel was linked with a move to United previously as the club sought to shore up their midfield, and with the team still suffering with the same problem years later, could reignite interest in the Belgian.
