Van Persie celebrates against Arsenal

David Moyes has confirmed that both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie will both miss Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge as Manchester United take on Chelsea.

Van Persie has been a long term injury doubt, last featuring for United last month in the Champions League tie against Shakhtar where he picked up a thigh injury but it was felt that Rooney could possibly feature after being sent to Egypt for some warm weather training, to aid an adductor injury.

But speaking ahead of the crunch match, David Moyes confirmed that both would miss the game:

“Wayne is not ready for Chelsea.

“He has been doing some running and has done some strengthening work around his groin. I have watched him running today. He looks well.

“Overall we are pleased. We hope we can get him back as soon as we can but we don’t want to put a date on it.”

Moyes confirmed that Van Persie could begin training next week as he looks to make a much anticipated comeback:

“I am hoping Robin might be able to start training next week.

“We want to get him back on the grass. That would be a great boost for us. He is a really important player.

“We have missed both of them but they are getting closer.”

Moyes will be ruing his lucky with injuries, with this yet another game against a big side in which he has not been able to pair the two strikers.

This season the only big game in which he has been able to do was Arsenal, a game that saw United emerge as 1-0 winners.
