It has been a tough time for United fans in recent years. After over a decade of being arguably the best team in Europe, if not the world, United has had to put up with the ongoing success of its noisy neighbors of late. Even City’s fall from completely dominating the domestic competitions has not been enjoyed, as United has lurched from crisis to crisis.
The current season seemed to be heading in much the same way. While City was challenging for another title and remaining a contender in Europe, United was struggling under the stewardship of Ruben Amorim, a head coach seemingly unable to adapt and get the best out of his players. With no European football at all, the poor showing in the league felt even worse.
All that has changed since Amorim was shown the door, however. With fan favorite Michael Carrick in charge, United has looked like a team re-energized. Champions League Qualification
So, can Manchester United really be considered as a title contender next season? The first caveat to that claim is whether Champions League qualification is won this term. United hasn’t played in Europe’s most prestigious club competition for two seasons now, and will need to be involved to attract the kinds of players it needs to challenge domestically.
Although the Carrick revolution has renewed belief in the side and catapulted United into the top four, the competition for places is fierce. With Arsenal and Manchester City virtually guaranteed a top-four finish, that leaves at least four teams battling for the remaining two spots. The EPL might be granted an additional Champions League place thanks to club performance this season, but there is no doubt that United need to qualify to seriously challenge in the league next season.
Make Teams Fear Old Trafford Again
At the time of writing, only Arsenal and Manchester City have lost fewer games than United at home this season. That is a trend that whoever is in charge next year will have to continue. But there is more than just simply winning at Old Trafford. United needs to make opposing teams fearful of the place again.
Although any United head coach needs to look forward, rather than to the past, it is a fact that many games were won during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure before a ball had even been kicked. Such was the atmosphere of Old Trafford that opponents were afraid to play as they normally would, handing a huge advantage to United. That fear needs to return, and that will only happen through winning games and the fans creating a hostile atmosphere.
Bolster Squad
There have been some positive additions to the United squad in the last few years, but they are quickly forgotten as the club repeatedly recruited poorly and opted for players who were never going to make the right impression at Old Trafford. It almost became a running joke for fans of other clubs, and that’s why the summer transfer window needs to be a success.
Carrick has shown that there is a very good core of players in the squad, and persuaded stars like Bruno Fernandes that a successful future can be had at Old Trafford. There is a desperate need for new players as well, however. Attacking midfielders and strikers are probably the main priorities. But a new keeper and some defensive leaders would also help.
Bringing in players who already have EPL experience, like Sandro Tonali or Elliot Anderson, would make the transition as seamless as possible, while a proven goal-scorer would help increase the attacking options of the side. Recruitment has been incredibly haphazard in recent years, and whoever is in charge next season needs to be given the funds to continue the good work that has already been done in the second half of this one.

Competition for Title
As much as United has improved, and hopefully will continue to improve, over the next few months, the main obstacles to winning another league title will be the other elite teams already in the EPL. United used to only have to deal with one real contender to its throne, but now Manchester City, Arsenal, and even Liverpool will all be going into the 2026-27 campaign with realistic hopes of winning the title.
There is a lot of work to do and decisions to be made before United can confidently consider itself a real contender. The most important will probably be appointing the next permanent manager. But United has now turned a corner and is playing the right way again. Titles may return to Old Trafford in the next few years, but even just being United again is a cause for celebration for most fans.
