Having seen Sir Alex Ferguson’s comments in the media this morning, I feel some may have been upset as he didn’t announce plans to buy the whole world and it’s aunt and many will immediately say it’s the Glazers taking money out of the transfer pot but if you read into his words they more than make sense.

Speaking to Inside United, Sir Alex said,

“No wholesale buying is needed as we have a very good squad that just needs tweaking here and there…we have some ideas at the moment but not many players will be joining the club.”

and realistically I agree in no way does our squad need major overhaul. There are positions that need attention such as a keeper to replace van der Sar (he is signed on for another year and is showing no sign of decline so this isn’t  important right now), a truly world class midfielder and perhaps a striker but I would say beyond the midfielder we are not in any major trouble.

We already have Chris Smalling coming in and along with Jonny Evans they should provide adequate cover at the back, whilst players like Cory Evans and Tom Cleverley on the fringes of the reserves ready to step up into the first team. Kiko Macheda is still young and getting experience whilst Mame Biram Diouf and Danny Welbeck are also options.

This isn’t to say we should do no buying and simply rely on the squad we have, it is obvious some additions are needed but if we don’t sign Ribery, Villa, Silva, Pastore and every other player we have been linked it isn’t all doom and gloom. But if we don’t make any moves in the transfer market that’s when we should start pressing the panic button.

If we fail to win any more silverware there will be a lot of pressure to buy new players but the main reason if we don’t win anything else this year is injuries really. You have to realise that with a settled back 4 and keeper this season we would probably have already won the league. But people won’t look at the bigger picture.

I agree thats why I said there is no need for major overhaul. I feel we are 1 or 2 players away from having the ideal team.
