Another day another player, yes ladies and gentlemen silly season is well and truly upon us and whilst we are meant to be battling Man City for the signature of James Milner we are also meant to have stepped up our pursuit for Everton’s Jack Rodwell.

It appears Rodwell has been destined to play for United since he emerged with some  stating he would be able to take over from Rio Ferdinand at the back as well as improve our engine room. The 19 year old  has been a revelation for Everton, even scoring against United during the season, and they will not want to see him go but United look ready to tempt them with a £15m bid.

Just last week Moyes had talked about tying him up with a new contract but £15m may be enough to force David Moyes hand.

Rodwell is a player of obvious talent and at 19 has his best years ahead of him but at this current stage is he really what we need? I don’t think Rodwell will step into the midfield and provide the energy/spark even though he has impressed both defensively and in an attacking capacity for Everton this season.

But the interesting prospect this signing throws up is that it casts doubt on Sir Alex’s claims that we could only be making one signing this summer.

I think Sir Alex realises that Rodwell is far from the complete article and if he is in fact looking at signing him then we may need a player who is more able to step into the team and do a job now. Rodwell is a player for the long term rather than just for now and Sir Alex himself has realised that the team needs additions so we could be bringing in more players.

This whole Jack Rodwell affair will be an interesting one and as talented as he is I’m sure other teams won’t sit by and watch us sign him. This could be the start of our summer spending.

    fergie send offer for david silva and sign him before real madrid. If you send offer we have bigger chance to sign him

    Everton turned down 15M offer from Chelsea last year for Rodwell, the only way to sell him is double that amount.

    In a time of inflated fees lets not be silly, there is no way on earth or in hell that Rodwell is going for £30m Jack

    Rodwell is a promising young player and it does seem Ferguson wants to sign him at some point. This summer might be that time. I would expect Everton to hold out for a deal worth £20 million, considering how crazy the market has become. I would love to see Rodwell and Milner join Man Utd and they seem like Fergie’s type of targets. Maybe Fergie will shock us all and bring Rodwell, Milner and Benzema to Old Trafford this summer. We can dream.

    Tom, I’m happy to share in that dream. I agree that it will probably take 20 million to get him.

    I really need to see more of Rodwell to make a valid opinion. However, if he’s attracted this much attention this year and last, then he’s probably the real deal.

    I would question Chudi’s reasoning though, do we really need an experienced player in this position (either CB or DM) asap? I agree that with that logic for a new striker and offensive midfielder, but I think our depth is quite strong in the back end of the field.

    If we are determined to get Rodwell, now is probably the best time as he won’t get any cheaper. He isn’t a finished product, but he’s not fully green either. He’s at the right age where he still has lots to learn, but would also have a lots to contribute and have a strong team to back him up when he makes the occasional inexperienced mistake.

    @Jonathan
    I think it was in a more advanced role that he really started to shine. Against us and Hull he grabbed goals and set up Arteta against Man City. He can do box to box but it’s really going forward when he started making headlines last season when coming back from injury.

    I agree he isn’t totally green but we are a big club that play big games and we need all our players to be 100% ready. I think he can make the step up but it could be risky!

    seeing as we had carrick and fletcher playing CB for a chunk of the season, i would venture to say that a possible future oshea type of player would benefit united a great deal. He can play multiple positions, hes young, hes english…that may be all the reasons SAF needs. Much rather have rodwell than milner and see united move to a 451 formation.
