The World Cup finally kicked off yesterday but there was disappointment for the two United players who appeared.

Javier Hernandez was named as a substitute with Mexico coach, Javier Aguirre preferring Guillermo Franco. Trailing (and with Franco showing nothing of note) Hernandez was introduced and completed the final 17 minutes of the game.

He showed some neat touches and the same good off the ball movement that was evident against England and Holland in the warm up to the competition.

Although he was unable to create any chances of note, he did play a part in Mexico’s equaliser as the ball evaded him but fell to captain Rafael Marquez who shanked the ball past Itumeleng Khune.

Mexico face France next and Hernandez will hope to start that game following Franco’s poor showing.

In the second match of the group Manchester United defender and France captain, Patrice Evra will have been disappointed that his team only managed to take a point from a game Uruguay side especially as they ended the game with 10 men.

Evra had a solid game but was booked for shirt pulling early in the first half with some saying he could have seen red, so he may count himself lucky he is available to face Mexico on the 17th. He got off to a slow start but as the game progressed got more into the game getting forward along the left wing as we have often seen him do for United.

Evra will expect his team to do better against Mexico in Polokwane on Thursday.
