great game and we played very well and deserved to win. berbatov played well, scored and created two, hopefully he keeps scoring and gets 20+ next season. alright debut for smalling and only flaw was the penalty. the kids played alright and will only get better. giggs and scholes was amazing as always. nice to see berbatov, welbeck and cleverley score. overall pretty happy with the team. fergie must be pleased with what he saw.

Smalling did OK still young and learning so I wouldn’t read too much into the mistake. Berbatov was the highlight along with Scholes in the first half (passing was as sweet as ever).
Was pretty happy with the performance myself looked comfortable.

  3. 3-1 flattered United though it’s no great revelation that they are a better side than us at all levels.

Unfortunately for youse Berbatov won’t face such wet behind the ears defending as he did last night.

Hey, sorry for the late replay. I’m just visiting here in Toronto and didn’t get to a computer till now. I doubt you have any need of my pics either as I was a bit too far back for any quality shots.

Anyway, though it was just a friendly, for diehard United fans it was huge to finally see them in person. The attendance was a bit lower than expected, but the ticket prices were a bit unreasonable, so it really attracking diehard fans only and not so much casual fans. The upside was that the atmosphere was very lively and a lot of fun. I was pleasantly surprised that players from both teams played with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Moreover, I expected the young ones to play in earnest so that they could impress (which they did), but it was nice to see the starters play with pride. Berbatov was terrific and I hope he can chanel that into the regular season.

Some my highlights were seeing the young players, of whom some will likely remain in the United shirt for years to come. As far as I know, this was Smalling’s first game of any sort with United and as mentioned earlier, he really played quite well apart from conceeding the penalty.

I was really hoping to see Cleverley play and my wish was granted in the 2nd half. Though he was almost too lively at times, his talent and ability to create great scoring chances are undeniable. He really meets the profile of an ideal attacking midfield player with his speed, dexterity and ability to create chances. Though I was leaning this way earlier, I’ve moved firmly into the position of keeping him with us this season and granting him as many starts as possible.

Obertan gave the ball away quite a bit in the first few minutes, but did improve as the 1st half went on, though he chose to shoot on a chance where he could’ve sent Berba in for an easy goal.

Diouf did quite well, picked up an assist and really lived up to his accolades of having terrific pace. He also covered defensive duties beyond expectation and was certainly playing with a conviction that even this friendly was a good showcase for himself.

Welbeck scored and his ball control seems to be one of his assets. Macheda was just okay and often tried to take on too many defenders at once. De Laet was surprisingly eager to join in offensively, though he was beaten by the Celtic forwards a couple times partially due to positioning but also because he is a bit undersized.

As for the others: Scholes and Fletcher played up to their reputations and displayed the skills their known for. Giggs was pretty quiet, Evans was okay, Gibson did not play very well, Brown was not great either, O’Shea was good and the twins played very well.

One day I’ll watch them at OT, but last night’s game was still a joy. Glory, Glory Man United!

I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it Jonathan. Looked like you were lucky enough to see a Scholes masterclass!
Performances like that are something to savour so I envy you haha!

Would liked to have seen Corry Evans but I’m happy with what I saw so I’m content.
