Everton's Mikel Arteta (centre) wheels away in celebration after his dramatic equaliser against Man Utd Why are we struggling and more importantly conceding so many goals away from home?

We can all see this isn’t the United we know and I’m going to try and dissect the reasons why we are under performing on our travels.

Firstly in my view the most obvious reason is simply down to the standard of teams playing on their home turf improving. The amount of players that have been brought into the Premier League in the summer was a staggering 127 – that’s the most we’ve had for many a year. Not to mention the fact that this season more than any, the number of quality players brought in (mostly by Man City) are of a vast amount. The likes of Chamakh, Ramires, Toure, Balotelli, Silva, Boateng, Johnson, and Rafael Van der Vaart (who could be the signing of the season) have all been brought in to strengthen both individual teams and the Premier League itself. You then have some players who are relatively unknown and others of a good professional standard at the clubs outside the top 4 or 5 who so far this season have proven that they have what it takes to help their team take points off the top temas like ourselves: Dembele of Fulham, the experienced duo of Gudjohnsen and Pennant at Stoke, Hleb at Birmingham, Ben Arfa at Newcastle, Gyan at Sunderland, Odemwingie at West Brom, Obinna at West Ham, Alcaraz at Wigan….the list goes on.

Every team this season are proving to be tough at home making it more difficult for even the top teams like ourselves to get a result away from home. Birmingham are known for their stubborn defence at home, Blackburn are always dangerous at Ewood Park and Stoke are another prime example of a team who have made their home a fortress over the last 2 seasons. I don’t think anyone will be looking forward to facing these teams away from home. Infact, I don’t think there’s ever an easy place to go nowadays!

Adding to that, the so called ‘lesser teams’ always seem to up their game against the big clubs. Just look at the shock results that have occurred so far this season. West Brom beating Arsenal at the Emirates, struggling Wigan winning at White Heart Lane, not to mention perhaps the shock of the season as the Seasider’s Blackpool managed to come away from Anfield with a staggering 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon. Resulting in Blackpool having the best away record in the Premier League– who would of guessed that?

United have so far played teams who are known to be a force on their home patch. Not an excuse I know, but Fulham, Everton, Bolton and I can now put Sunderland in the same category simply due to the fact that we are in the minority of teams to have beaten the Black Cats at home in the year 2010. Looking on the bright side, we haven’t lost, but I’m sure you will agree, losing a 2 goal lead against Everton, missing a penalty and then going on to draw at Craven Cottage feel like losses nonetheless.

  1. Ok, good read but your point about “due to the fact the Black Cats have failed to lose at home in the year 2010” is wrong. We beat them in May when Nani scored the winner (after Liverpool gave away their match against Chelsea)

Hark now hear the City sing united ran away, and we all fight forever more because of Derby Day
    CITY CITY CITY!!1

Your right, I apologise. Apart from a defeat from the hands of ourselves and a Carling cup defeat earlier in the season, Sunderland haven’t lost at home – quite a decent home record I’d say!

Pretty good points. It seems to be a current phenomenon accross Europe where the big teams can’t dominate like they used to. Looks at how many points Real and Barca have dropped in a league where their revenue sharing is laughable. France no longer has Lyon dominating outright, Mainz are leading the Bundesliga and the tables in Seria A are all over the place. Overall, this is a good thing for the sport – but don’t get me wrong, I want nothing less than United domination.

We need to be a bit patient as Carrick and Ando just came back. We will need to do something in the transfer window if things don’t improve, but we are rarely first out of the gate and should wait before hitting the panic button.

Oh, and I agree about Van der Vaart. He alone made Tottenham move from possibly hanging onto the top 4, to being much more likely. He already has me thinking what if, in regards to coming to United.

Liverpool didn’t giveaway their match against Chelsea Gerrard did. The other players wanted to win and Gerrard suspected that with their display so he made sure that Chelsea had a lead just in case. When he retires i’m sure he will admit it.

i feel sick and hurted buy the way united are playing at. mesut ozil 12 -16 million. vAN der vat 8 million. surley that value. i could that myself. if united realy had no money to buy players. and idea . would be list fans 2 euro a summer logged in to acccount and then they transfer it to the rman united account. ouick easy 2 euro. i am pretty sure every man united fan would in 2 eruo to buy a player. there is 75000 fans go every weak. if not loddged it in a bank the have collection outside old trafford. but then put back in to the club wanker gill and then go out and buy one player with that money ie sneijder. its pretty easy if they jiust were fucking broke. but they wont . so they wont be gettig a penny out of me until does leaches leave my club i love

Sell Rooney, Buy every defender worth the check….
    LOL
    Good points
Here is the point it ain’t always sunshine and roses, you have to put your hand in the sh1t and spread it over the bush so that one flower can grow.
We have to many average players like Owen, Ando, Gibbo, Park, Carrick. SAF needs a shake up and establish a new identity in the locker room. sell them and buy some new boys strengthen the mid and we will concede less goals.
VDV will get hurt and go missing look at his track record and look how sh1t he was in RM, he wouldn’t fit in here anyways. Oezil is a poor mans Scholes plus oezil has no gas tank he is soft and over priced!
For ppl who harp on fooking money get over it we have it we buy homeless footballers for fun @ 8m a pop!The funds are there! Sh!t Balotelli was 5 million away from signing with us. Unless your in the Glazers check book u need not type or speak on little girls gossip. Buy the kits and tickets get on with it!
