An early penalty saw Manchester United through to the 4th round of the FA Cup against Liverpool today.

United and Liverpool’s rivalry is a fiery one and today’s game didn’t lack any of the passion you would expect but two big decisions will be grabbing the headlines so here is my take.

The penalty: On first look, it looked a clear penalty, Daniel Agger clearly made contact with Dimitar Berbatov and my brother who happens to be of the enemy said the same, but upon watching the replay I think it was a soft touch.

Webb was a fair distance away from the the actual incident and he may or may not have seen it so it will be called a bad decision but as I said watching it at full speed without a reply I thought it was a penalty and that’s with a better view.

There has been talk of it being a dive but there was definitely contact and whilst it wasn’t the kind of contact that should merit a penalty there was contact nevertheless. Agger’s defending wasn’t the smartest and was made to pay. The Scousers are in uproar about the decision talking about Berbatov going down to easily but a Scouser will confirm that during yesterday’s coverage of the FA Youth Cup game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace, John Aldridge implored a young player to go to ground and chided him for being too honest. Live by the sword die by the sword eh?

The Red Card: I don’t understand why this is such a hotly disputed topic. For me this is a certain red card and had he done more damage to Carrick I would be even more livid than I am. ITV made a point of highlighting the incident prior where Raul Meireles appeared to bottle a 50-50 with Rafael. Gerrard being the great leader that he is had to lead from the front and show how its done and flew in on Carrick.

He had left the ground and had studs showing, offences that would and should see you red carded at any level of football. Perhaps because of the nature of the penalty Webb had given at the start of the match, such a big thing is being made of the decision to send Gerrard off but the fact he didn’t even show remorse and was mouthing off takes away an sympathy the most bias of spectators may have had.

The game came to life in the second half and we could and I think should have been awarded a penalty after a foul on Giggs but we won the game ad the decision to award the first may have prevented Webb from pointing to the spot again.

Despite this the most important fact of the day is that we won and that we are through to the next stage of the competition.

ironic how after they’re knocked out the scousers don’t care about the cup eh?

they had 88 more minutes in which to equalise and never once threatened apart from the 1st half free-kick.

United should have had a penalty early in the second half so as far as I’m concerned they cancel out

I think that was rather balanced. I refuse to hear ANY Liverscum fan talk about diving when you have captain starfish wearing your armband.

If you are so incensed with the perceived cheating you give AC Milan the CL trophy from 2005 as Gerrard dived to win that peno and we’ll replay the tie?

Yeah I thought it would go quiet, bunch of sour pricks

Ha.Ha. I was going to come on here and say i thought we played shitty, but were still deserved winners, as we obviously created more, and benefitted from Liverpool fuckups (nice tackle Steve) but after hearing these loser scousers whining, i suppose its better to say FUCK OFF you shite liverpool fans. Your team sucks, there are 11 teams better than you in the prem, and your best players dont even want to play there any more… thought Ferdinand Giggs Rafael and Evans were terrific. Fletcher dreadful.. Disappointed to not drill a small club like Liverpool 5-0, but a win is a win

shaaun I accept it wasnt a pen but its not as if you deserved to win. Utd were clearly the better side and should have had another pen in the 2nd half. If you want someone to blame maybe you should start with stevie me. your latest messiah took off your only goal threat with 15 min left in the biggest game of your season. explain that one. I suggest you watch this before you come onto anymore utd blogs crying about dubious decisions

  9. shaaun says:

shaaun your first comment on this united blog was over 5 hours ago…how about you toddle back off to wherever you came from and don’t come back. I’m all for debate and all that but me thinks you’re just a sad deluded person. Even your fellow scousers would back me up on that

ill go to bed when im ready but for you to say you where the better team is a laugh you could not score in open play and it took a dive from one of your players to enable you to win the game yes gerrard deserved to be sent of but that was never a pen and berbatov should admit that he dived.
