We said it would be a tight game and as expected it was just that but it was Marseille who looked the more likely to break the deadlock as they came on strong after the break.
Another solid performance from Smalling at the back who for me was our best player. Yet that itself is a damning indication of how the game went for us.
We looked a lot better when Scholes came on but I’m sure all the the chalk boards and stats will show you we just weren’t anywhere near adventurous enough to get something out of the game.
Effective isn’t a word we like to associate with United but that was what this performance was. It got the job done and sets up the tie at Old Trafford with us needing a win to progress – good thing our home form is better than our away form then!

Too many “effective” players selected for our midfield IMO. Not that there was much choice given our injuries, but it does expose our lack of depth in terms of creative players. I don’t think there’s a problem with any particular player, but our list of those who are “reliable” outweighs those who are “inventive” far too much. No need for a squad overhaul, but a special addition will help.
That said, 0-0 away isn’t too bad.
Agree with Jonathan. Fine performances, but again, a lack of creativity in the midfield. Thought Fletcher did his job, but Gibson and Carrick were sub par.. Can we please address this need next summer? Defence was good, though wish Rafael got the start just to add a bit more creativity going forward. O’Shea just doesn’t have that quality. Respect has to be given though as i felt he did defend very well.. Not a bad result, but also a dangerous one until i see 2 goals scored by us in the return leg.
Smalling with another imperious display..Won everything in the air and generally tackled and intercepted well..Also decent in distribution..This kid will go a long long way..
