New signing Rafael Leao was drafted straight into action as United took on Sunderland at Carrington last Thursday.
Having beaten another North East side in Newcastle in the previous game, United looked to continue their good form with another win.
There was also a place for in the starting line up for Mats Møller Dæhli who had made his u18 bow in the previous game and the tie also saw the return of Will Keane and the young striker didn’t disappoint by getting on to the scoresheet late on as United ran out 2-0 winners.
United took the lead on the 62 minute when Gyliano Van Velzen was unfairly challenged by Sunderland captain John Egan and Tom Lawrence converted from the spot.
In between our two goals Sunderland were also reduced to 10 men as Jordan Laidler was dismissed for taking his protests for a penalty too far after his cross hit the hand of Sean McGinty.
