Ryan Giggs believes the two defeats to Manchester City cost Manchester United the title last season.

United were hammered 6-1 at Old Trafford then meekly surrendered 1-0 at the Etihad as Roberto Mancini’s side won the title for the first time since 1968.

United did themselves no favours and at one point had lead their rivals by 8 points but crumbled in the title run in, also losing 1-0 to Wigan and allowing Everton to fight back and claim a 4-4 draw despite being 3-1 down at Old Trafford.

United face City this Sunday at the Etihad, and veteran midfielder Giggs is desperate to ensure there is no repeat as he told Sky Sports:

“If we had drawn the game [at City] we would have won the league.

“Those two games were probably the difference so hopefully we can get the result and that will be the difference at the end of the season.”

We played poorly in both matches last season. I think most Man Utd fans are nervous about Sunday if they are being honest. We are just a strange team this year. I mean losing to Cluj at home, that is just too odd even for us.

I sense if we really want to beat Man City and win the title, then we of course need to improve the defence big time and start working together as a team. However I believe the main issue is Wayne Rooney. We badly need to old Rooney to come back if we want success. I mean the fearless and unpredictable Rooney, if he still exists that is.
