David De Gea: The Spaniard had little to do tonight, made a save with his feet in the first half after being wrong footed. Little he could do about Adriano’s wonder strike. 6

Phil Jones: Did well getting forward down the right even if his crossing wasn’t the best. The usual hustle and bustle that Jones brings to the game was present. 6.5

Alexander Buttner: Constantly looked to get forward especially after United went behind but defensively wasn’t convincing. Sums up Buttner so far really. 6

Chris Smalling: Looked a bit shaky almost gifted Cluj a goal early on. Could have given United the lead himself but headed wide, improved as the game continued. 6

Scott Wootton: Looked nervy but overcame this, did well beside Smalling in a youthful center back pairing. Made some key blocks. 6

Tom Cleverley: Picked up a calf injury that will rule him out of the derby but off tonight’s showing not many will miss him. Misplaced passes continually as he failed to get a significant foothold in the game and missed a golden chance in the first half after a heavy first touch. 5

Nick Powell: After his impressive display against Galatasaray, it is understandable that people expected him to deliver tonight. Started well but as is to be expected he started to lag as the game went on. Inexplicably played out wide when his best work is done centrally. 6

Ryan Giggs: Another who seemed incapable of finding his team mates with a pass. Was unafraid to stick a foot in but should have been able to influence the game more with his experience. 6

Wayne Rooney: Played wide right and got minutes as Sir Alex wanted but was unable to build on his showing against Reading. Almost scored a wonderful chip. 6

Danny Welbeck: Worked well out wide linking up with Alexander Buttner and was constantly involved centrally as United looked to get at Cluj all to no avail. Header was impressively saved by Cluj keeper. 7

Javier Hernandez: Has improved massively and tonight was a chance for him to show that he has a little more to his game than just goals. Dropped deep to pick up the ball, held up play but had no chances of note to do what we all love him for. 7

Subs

Paul Scholes: Attempted to get United ticking after coming on for Cleverley but to no avail. Tried hitting the flanks to catch Cluj asleep and also saw some long range efforts blocked when implored to shoot by the crowd. Sold himself for Cluj’s goal but with such a strike would be silly to blame him. 6

Kiko Macheda: Didn’t have much time on the pitch but was able to threaten Cluj with a few chances. 5

Darren Fletcher: Came on late but still looks rusty. 5
