Lampard

Having revealed how he missed out on Gareth Bale due to Southampton’s reluctance to play ball, Sir Alex has added another name to the list of ones that got away.

Manchester United face Chelsea later today and the team is likely to include a certain Frank Lampard. Lampard was heavily linked with United earlier in the season, along with Ashley Cole, and whilst Lampard’s contract situation at Chelsea isn’t any clearer, the rumours have died down.

Aged 34, Lampard is coming to the end of his career, but Sir Alex has revealed that he could have signed the Chelsea legend BEFORE he went to Stamford Bridge in 2001.

United had watched Lampard at West Ham but his own delay scuppered the chance of any deal being reached:

“We looked at him at West Ham when he was a young player and I regret not doing it — where else could I get 200 goals from midfield? Lampard is fantastic, an incredible player.

“If he gets the goal record… I don’t think there’s a midfielder who will do that again. He is quite phenomenal.

“He has that great knack Bryan Robson had of timing when coming into the box. He arrives at just the right time and it’s all about timing for that kind of player.

“John Wark at Ipswich was another one who could time his runs into the box.

“That value has got him 200 goals. Plus I can’t remember him ever being injured.”

Undoubtedly he would have been a brilliant acquisition,  but we haven’t done too badly without him I think!

A terrific player and a legend for Chelsea. We have certainly missed a central midfielder with the ability to score goals, especially since Scholes started playing more as a deep lying playmaker. I would say we have missed that since 2005, which ironically is when Lampard start to become an unstoppable goalscorer.
