Wayne Rooney smiles during a training session at Carrington

Chelsea have confirmed that they made a bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The London club released a statement confirmed that they had made a bid yesterday but claimed that reports being fed to press in Sydney were off the mark, because whilst the terms of the offer are confidential, no players were included in it, ruling out a money plus Mata or Luiz deal.

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.”
