Wigan manager Owen Coyle is excited to have taken Manchester United youngster Nick Powell on loan, and is looking forward to playing a part in his development.
Powell joined Wigan on loan for the season on the final day of the transfer window, part of the transfer roundabout that saw James McCarthy go to Everton and Marouane Fellaini thus joining United.
Powell was used sparingly last season, scoring on his debut and impressing when he was given a chance especially against Galatasaray in the Champions League but at his age and his stage of development a loan move away this term seemed like the best option. One for is for sure and that is that United fans will be keeping a close eye on the Scores at Wigan this season to keep up to date with Powell’s progress!
Having played his part in the development of Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge, taking both on loan whilst at Bolton, Owen Coyle seems like the perfect mentor for the fledging Powell and he is looking forward to the challenge of pushing the midfielder on to the next level:
“He’s a huge talent, an exciting young English player and he’s certainly one of those to keep an eye on.
“As much as I’m a manager, first and foremost we’re coaches.
“You want to help young players develop. You think back to when you were a young player and all the help you had from various coaches and managers throughout your career.
“If you can pass on any knowledge and experience to help young players go an have a glittering career, it certainly gives you a good feeling, because maybe you’ve played a little part in their development.”
Speaking to BBC Manchester, Coyle added:
“We believe it can be a ‘win-win-win’ scenario.
“It’s a win for us getting a quality player like that, a win for Nick because he gets league time at a very high level, and a win for Manchester United.
“With league time under his belt and European experience, he’ll go back there a better player.”
