Van der Sar's retirement marks the end of an era

Whilst the answer tends to lean towards one, the question of who was better between Edwin Van Der Sar and Peter Schmeichel is a one that is frequently asked.

After years in goal for United, Schmeichel left the club as United’s best ever goalkeeper and one of, if not the best goalkeeper to play the game.

After a series of failed experiments, Sir Alex Ferguson finally got things right when he brought Edwin Van Der Sar in from Fulham and whilst the Dutchman was at the club for 6 years, he did enough to threaten Schmeichel’s throne.

The two greats met up at a UEFA function in Nice last night, prompting Van Der Sar to tweet this picture:

Whilst the pair’s place in United history is cemented, you have to wonder if David De Gea could surpass them given that he has time on his side?
