Thomas Vermaelen is a step closer to joining Manchester after manager Wenger admitted that the club captain’s future is uncertain.

Vermaelen has been heavily linked with a move to this summer, with new boss keen to bring in the Ajax graduate. Initially Arsenal appeared stern in that the Belgian would not be sold to United and things went quiet.

But with the over and now fully immersed in his role as United boss, things have heated up again especially after the center back was snapped on holiday with United’s .

Speaking after Arsenal’s pre season win over Boreham Wood, Wenger admitted:

“I cannot guarantee he (Vermaelen) will stay, but should he go I would bring another centre-back in for sure.”

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both leaving Old Trafford this summer, United are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Mats has been constantly linked with a move to United but appear reluctant to sell, so if he can stay fit, Vermaelen for a good price could prove good business.
