According to reports, Manchester United’s attempt at aquiring Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels could be stifled by fellow Borussian teammate, Ilkay Gundogan’s, decision to leave after the season.

Indeed, Gundogan has expressed his desire to change clubs following this season and a move appears inevitable.

This is a potential issue for United because, according to The Mirror, Dortmund have a tradition in place of allowing just one star player to leave each summer.

Hummels and Gundogan certainly fall under the “star player” category. Both have proven to be very valuable players for Dortmund.

United have been in pursuit of Hummels for a very long time now, and the hierarchy at Old Trafford are growing increasingly worried that Gundogan’s decision to ditch Dortmund will interfere with their chances of obtaining Hummels.

If Dortmund are serious about allowing just one star player to leave, then there may not be room for both Gundogan and Hummels to leave this summer.

The idea of missing out on Hummels is a haunting one for United managment. Louis Van Gaal has always seen him as a perfect fit for his defencive line at Old Trafford, so failing to sign him this summer would be a blow to Van Gaal’s plans for United next year and beyond.
