Cesc Fabregas joined Chelsea yesterday, after being linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester United.

Last summer the club appeared ready to move heaven and earth to sign the Spaniard, but this year the interest wasn’t as intense.

Journalist Andy Mitten claimed United had received information that Cesc was open to a move to United, although he was happy to remain at Barcelona but having been told that he could go this summer one would think that United would have been in for him especially having been told of his availability in April.

Having been told of his availability last summer, there is a chance that United could have been warned that a move for him would have been futile as Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo are reporting that Fabregas’ destination was determined by his girlfriend.

The paper claim that Daniella Semaan was totally against the idea of living in Manchester, meaning that if they had to leave Barcelona a London club was the preference.

With Arsenal seemingly choosing not to exercise their first option on the midfielder, it left Chelsea as his destination, snapping up the 27 year old for a fee thought to be in the £27-£30m region.

The signing will come as a double knock for United given that they were seemingly willing to pay that fee last summer.
