Rio Ferdinand fit for season opener?

July 5, 2010

Having been reported as a long term injury absentee, Rio Ferdinand is looking at a quick return to action.

It had been claimed that the United centre back would be out of action until November and the Mail Online yesterday attributed quotes to Sir Alex Ferguson confirming that Rio would be out for four months but the defender may be back quicker than expected as United journalist Ben Hibbs has claimed that Rio could be back for the first game of the season.

Speaking via Twitter Hibbs said:

@rioferdy5 Rio Ferdinand should/could be fit for first game v Newcastle

This will be a massive weight off the shoulders of United fans as injuries to our defence last season cost us massively. It goes without saying, having a fully fit first choice defence to start the season puts us in better stead to regain our title despite having the likes of Evans and Smalling to step in.
