It was revealed on Monday night that Rio Ferdinand’s 12 year stay at Manchester United would come to an end this summer, after Louis Van Gaal sanction the decision not to give the 35 year old a new deal.

Many felt that with Nemanja Vidic leaving , the club would retain Ferdinand’s services for at least one more season to help ease the transition and keep some seniority in the back line but the former captain will be looking for a new team this summer and is this the reason why?

It is being reported that Van Gaal is interested in bringing Portuguese born Dutch center back Bruno Martins Indi to Old Trafford.

The 22 year old Feyenoord player has become a key part of Van Gaal’s Dutch side winning 13 international caps, missing just 2 of Holland’s World Cup qualifiers. The MEN claim that he is being looked at along with Mats Hummels as potential incoming center backs. With both coming in it would have left United with 6 competing for 2 spots, so with Ferdinand’s contract running out he would have been the easiest to cut.

Indi will most likely be part of Van Gaal’s World Cup squad and could then follow his manager to Old Trafford, unfortunately at the expense of Ferdinand.
